Operation Essen Reason for Loss Took off at 2321. Crashed in the mouth of the River Schelde. Plane was Wellington 1V Z1344 which was to take part in the second large 1000 bomber raid on Essen. The raid took its toll on the bomber force with 35 aircraft lost. A total of 140 aircrew were killed and 47 made POW.
