Tale 57, Wartime Log page 21, taken from "Tales from the Sagan Wood". On a night raid to Stuttgart flying at 50 feet we were hit by light flak from Amiens. Flying at speed of 387 miles per hour just out of dive, we were hit on the port wing and caught on fire, climbed and dived to try to put out fire, the port inner engine fell out and wing started to break off and port engine caught on fire so we crash landed on ploughed field. We had one 4000lb bomb and 6000lb of incendiary bombs. Crew safely got out of crash and three finally got home. I was loose five days in France. Captured near Paris, sent to Dulad, six days in cooler then sent to Luft 1, twelve months there and then sent to Luft 6, five days and nights in cattle truck and never got out, there three weeks and then sent down to Luft 3.POW German - held Dulag Luft, Stalag Luft 1, Stalag Luft 111 and Stalag Luft 1V. POW number 870 RTA.
