Plane was USAAF Douglas C-49H[DC-3] under charter for military purposes with RAAF aircrew. The aircraft took regular courier trips to New Guinea. While circling to land at Higgins Field in far North Queensland it crashed when it struck the top of a hill while landing in darkness. Six personnel on board were killed.
